Golden Triangle Woodturners
Mike Zunkowski -
I became interested in woodworking when I first got married. My grandfather use to make furniture for a company and had shown me some things he had made. My Uncle and his Sons were cabinet makers and all had migrated to individual businesses. I happened to work 1 block from my cousin’s business and started going over after work and watching and learning from them. I even gave some free labor to just learn more woodworking. Soon I was building furniture pieces. My wife would say for every furniture piece or project I built to take part of the monies we saved rather than buying the piece and go buy a new woodworking tool. So I kept learning, building, and expanding my skills. I now have built a large portion of my furniture and cabinets at my home as well as doing work for others. I am in the shop every week and its one of my goals to be in it every day when I retire. Today one of my passions is woodturning. I still do flat work but turning wood really ignites my artist side. My excitement is more focused at learning segmented turning. See the wonderful variations of wood and patterns are really inspiring. I am still an infant in segmented turning but my artist side enjoys being able to take different woods and make different patterns. I love segmented turning because there are so many different ideas in the project and I can control them all. I can design, create color, build unique shapes, create different sizes, and make them for different functions. I am not contained by the limit of the size, the colors, the shapes, the patterns, or the wood in my supplies like I am with regular blank turning. I hope to ignite that spark in you.
